Top 5 Ways to Help You Stick to Your New Year’s Resolutions

By Paul Dixon

You might say that we have not yet even had Christmas. That is true but a lot of people start thinking in December or even earlier about what they would like to do differently in the New Year.

A lot of New Year’s resolutions fall by the wayside during the first months because not many people will actually create a vision for themselves. They know what they want to do, i.e. lose weight, stop smoking etc. but they do not give themselves a vision. Here are the 5 top tips to make sure you stick to your resolution!

Create a vision

1)    Sit down and think about what you would like to achieve. If it is giving up smoking, think about a healthy new you, think about all the things that will be better once you have given up. Create a picture in your mind of the new, healthy you. Or if it is getting fit, create a picture in your mind of the new, fit you. You get the picture!

Write down your vision

2)    Write down all the positives you have come up with. Don’t stop at 5! Keep writing, I bet you can come with another two. Once you have done that, put all the positives on a card and keep the card with you. Even better, stick one in your handbag, on your bathroom mirror, in the car! Keep yourself constantly reminded of the new healthy, fit you!

Create a vision board

3)    Go one step further and create yourself a vision board! Yes, get out your scissors, a big piece of thick paper and that pile of old magazines and start cutting! Stick all the images that you like on the paper and put it somewhere where you can see it every day to remind you of your vision. This is fun!

Tell a friend

4)    Get your best friend, mum, sister or anybody you trust involved and tell them what you would like to achieve. They will help you and support you in your low moments.

Reward yourself

5)    Be kind to yourself; give yourself a treat once you have reached that first little goal to keep your motivation up. A treat could be anything, going to the cinema with a friend, having a make over, or buying yourself that book that you wanted to buy for ages!

And most importantly of all, when you have achieved your vision, celebrate! I know you can do it!
